In 1992 the UK signed up to a programme to address environmental issues. From this a local agenda (Local Agenda 21) was developed which encourages local communities to take action on environmental issues. An important aspect of this is to become environmentally sustainable i.e. to find a way of meeting our needs whilst protecting the planet for future generations. There are different ways in which we can become more sustainable, one of the simplest is to recycle. By recycling we can reduce the amount of waste we produce and the impact our waste has on the environment.
Most householders in the Stockton area now have a kerbside collection scheme operating, in which Stockton Council will take away your recyclable goods. This scheme is promoted by Freda the Frog who also goes out into schools to encourage children to think more about their environment. Visitors to Wynyard Woodland Park can also bring along newspapers, magazines, junk mail, food and drinks cans and glass bottles and jars to be recycled. Recycling bins are located near to the toilet block just off the main car park and are accessible by car.
Composting your kitchen waste is another easy way to recycle. Kitchen waste from our tea rooms is put in the compost bin in the newly developed wildlife garden. Eventually this will be used to improve the soil around the flower borders. Ranger staff will be only too happy to give visitors tips and advice on how to compost your own kitchen waste, they can be contacted on (01740) 630011. For more information on recycling please contact the Care For Your Area team on (01642) 391959.
